Lost mind today. Work so excruciating...endless avalanches of numbers...what the fuck do I know about finance. A thirteen hour day...hours to come...then swimming...line-editing of Love Misery coming along...losing mind again and again...Transparent Things pleasing on the subway. Fuck! Darren Aronofsky last night, good talk at the Apple store. Reading Jen Banash's book too, almost done. What do other people like to read when they write?

I know it sounds funny but if I'm working on a short story, I tend to read novels and if I'm backing working on a novel, I read short stories.

Wacky, I know.

Interesting. I always look for something with the same, I dunno, feel. Some intangible quality that is similar to the thing I'm trying to get done but dissimilar superficially, so I'm not tempted to be too influenced by it in the mundane details.

I like to read only nonfiction or poetry when I'm writing fiction. And nutrition labels.

I like to work 110 hour weeks in the hospital when I'm writing, and read nothing. Oh, wait, I also write almost nothing, and what I write sucks. Poor example.

The Martian Chronicles is the book with the mood I want for the novella I am working on.

Lorrie Moore. Mina, you should meet Tao. I don't know who Marc Richards is.

Beautiful Losers--I haven't read that. I read Jesus' Son all the time, though.

I read it. I liked it all right but definitely prefer Lorrie Moore and Denis Johnson.
