Strangelets moment

A moment from Strangelets. This is from a "comedy of manners" section, not a "terrorist rampage" section. The protagonist, Brian, is desperate to win back his ex-girlfriend but generally perplexed by human interaction, especially with women.

You seem to like writing in the present tense. Is it necessity for you, or comfort?

I like the way it reads and I have this elementary logistical/logical problem with the past tense, which is that the narrator already knows what's going to happen! Obviously that's a good and useful thing in many narratives, but every time I've started writing a novel in past tense (with the exception of one unpublished one) I went back and changed it to present.
