I like it less and less as I go along. I'm hoping the fourth book is excellent. The central subject matter--the murders in Juarez--is deeply fascinating, but the pretentiously portentous digressions are getting intolerable.
No, worse. I lost tolerance when one character just completely randomly thinks of a weird book he once read about someone named O'Higgins or something and then we get pages and pages describing the content of this utterly inscrutable and pointless book.

I should say ALLEGED central subject matter, because so far the book has kept it entirely in the background.
Are these Melvillean digressions? Chapter-long studies of whale bones?
