I've found that very little sleep, I can manage, and 7-9 hours I'm ok, but that in-between time of 4-6 hours, I feel like I'm dying. It probably is sleep cycle related.
It turns out there is a product called "Wakemate" that purports to help you wake up at the proper time in your sleep cycle. I am dubious.
Likely you're much more refreshed-feeling when you wake during REM sleep, which is very near the awake state in terms of level of cortical arousal and encephalographic rhythms and such; the transition is much less abrupt.
Now that is a first-class comment.
