brothercyst: March 2012

I've been re-reading Alicia Erian's The Brutal Language of Love this week, which remains one of my favorite short story collections of all time, and it reminded me that I have to re-read Towelhead. But I can't find my copy, so I'll buy a new one.  When is Erian's next book going to exist?

Every so often I get sucked into RapGenius, the website started as a hobby by some guys I know from New York that has now turned into a beast, with like actual investors and shit, and I spend a few hours clicking around.

Just now I noticed they've got exegeses for non-rap artists as well.  Like Lana del Rey.

Today at lunch we started talking about Lana del Rey.  Someone loathed her.  I defended her.  I find her superfascinating.  Not sexy, just creepy and enthralling.  And all so painfully self-aware, yet more magnetic because of it.  I feel like I'm watching a David Lynch movie when I watch her sing, even on the SNL performance.  The "Video Games" video is hypnotic.

It's a rare day of rain in Southern California.  This is a wonderful excuse to stay in and write.  (And also to read the Terry Southern and Bret Easton Ellis interviews in the Paris Review which arrived a few days ago.)  And tonight, Mad Men.

The signing was fun yesterday.  I'd never been to Dark Delicacies but I'll go there again.  My friend Kati almost couldn't make it because she and her roommate were trapped in her apartment by a psychotic squirrel (and they took the incredible picture below as proof) but then they showed up in the end, unbitten, bearing cookies.

I like this Ryan Bradford Goodreads review of The Obese.

"Just finished this book and feel slightly weird for enjoying it. It's an ugly, ugly book--the cover's (amazingly) grotesque and every character in The Obese is a piece of shit."

Did another q&a, this time for the Collagist blog.

Today was weirdly cold in Los Angeles.  I'm cold right now.

I did a q&a at Identity Theory, check it out.

I was wrong about The Wire.  The first time I watched it I thought it was half a great show.  The drug dealer storyline was epic and engaging and the cops were boring.  Watching it again I realized I was just wrong.  It's 100% a great show.  I hate/love being wrong.
